Eye problems such as glaucoma and dry eye are common as people get older. A new study finds that prescribing generic drugs for seniors’ eye problems could save millions of dollars every year.
– In more than three-quarters of cases, doctors prescribe brand name medications for eye problems in seniors.
– These medications are used by seniors on a daily basis.
– Generics are just as effective as brand medications and cost three or four times less.
Noting that patients may stop taking medications because of the cost, the study authors said patients using glaucoma drugs should ask their doctor about effective, less expensive medications.
